History of the Lagar Hurtado

Lagar Hurtado
The Lagar of Hurtado is located in the Jaboneros rural district within the Los Montes de Málaga Natural Park. Its proximity to the medieval Cerro de la Reina fortress and other historical sites highlights its significance, with documented land use dating back to the 16th century.
The earliest records, from 1638-1658, show Cristóbal de Villarroel purchasing the estate, building the house and Lagar, and planting vineyards. By 1663, he expanded the vineyards. After his death, the property passed to Antonio and Lázaro Torrijos, influential figures in Málaga. They also owned the Torrijos Lagar and were ancestors of General Jose María Torrijos, executed in 1831 for resisting King Ferdinand VII's absolutist rule.
From the mid-19th century, the property changed hands multiple times. By the late 19th century, Jose Gartner lived near the Lagar of Los Llanes, visited by Pablo Ruiz Picasso. Nearby, El Lince mill was owned by Picasso's uncle, Baldomero Ghiara.
This pattern of shifting ownership continued into the 20th century, with both local and foreign owners of influence. Notable surnames include Heredia, Franquelo Lasso de la Vega, and Larios, representing prominent industrialists and city elites.
